Virgen del Rocío

Virgen del Rocío

The painting depicts the Virgin of El Rocío mounted on a pure Spanish horse, referencing the traditional processions held in the village of El Rocío, in Almonte (Huelva). This portrayal is not typical in classical Marian iconography, but it highlights the historical connection between Marian devotion and Andalusian equestrian culture. The Spanish horse, also known as the Andalusian, has long been a symbol of nobility and plays a central role in many religious pilgrimages and festivals in southern Spain. The Virgin is shown wearing her customary embroidered garments and surrounded by flowers, reflecting her appearance during the annual pilgrimage. The setting and composition evoke the marshlands of Doñana and emphasize the horse’s importance in the Rocío pilgrimage.
