Unicornio azul

“Unicornio Azul” by Silvio Rodríguez is a song filled with symbolism and nostalgia, where the “unicorn” stands for something deeply valuable that has been lost — innocence, an ideal, love, or a stage of life. Through this loss, the speaker confronts personal growth and maturity while expressing a persistent search for what is no longer there. In the painting of the young rider, that same tension appears: his face still holds a youthful softness, yet his posture is firm, as if he already carries a sense of responsibility. Just like in the song, something important seems to have been left behind, even if we don’t know exactly what.

Both works share blue as a central element. In the song, it’s the color of the unicorn; in the painting, it colors both the young rider and his horse. This blue surrounds the characters in an atmosphere of introspection, loss, and growth. The song and the image both speak of what has been left behind and what comes next—without exaggeration, but with a quiet melancholy. The boy in the painting could very well be the narrator of the song, captured in the moment just after losing his blue unicorn.
